How to Store Your Christmas Decorations Like a Pro

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and if you haven’t done it already, you’re probably pulling out your decorations and getting ready to make your house the most festive one on the block!

While no one wants to think about the holidays coming to an end, we thought we’d share some of our team’s top tips for storing decor.

Next year when it’s time to decorate again, you’ll thank yourself for taking extra care when packing everything up!

Lights

Have you ever cracked open the box of string lights only to discover that every single one of them is tangled up? Save yourself the headache of untangling next year by making your own DIY light spool. If you save cardboard gift boxes, you can cut out a bobbin shape (or a capital letter “I”) about a foot long. Cut short notches on both ends, slip one end of your light string into one of the notches, wrap until you reach the other end, and voila! You’ve got yourself a neatly wrapped string of lights, ready to go for next year. Store vertically in a plastic storage pin for best results!

And if you don’t feel like DIY-ing it, you can always buy light spools or reels from Amazon or your favorite hardware store!

Inflatables

To make your inflatables last as long as possible, there are a few rules you should follow when putting them up for storage!

  • Make sure they’re clean and dry before storing

  • Close any zippers or vents

  • Roll, don’t crumple!

  • If you’ve lost the original packaging, try using a plastic storage bin or water-resistant duffel bag.

Wreaths

You can protect your wreaths in the off season by storing them upright and hanging them to avoid any flattening or damage. Adding a long wall hook to wherever you store your decor is a great way to create storage space for multiple wreaths. To avoid dust accumulation, you can wrap them in cellophane!

Finally, just like when you’re packing for a move, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to label everything! Not only will it speed up the process of locating specific items, it will also help you remember which boxes are used to store specific decorations.
