How Moving Insurance Works and Why It’s Important
Did you know that if you’re hiring a professional moving company to help you move, the law requires you to place a value on your possessions? This protects both the mover and the customer because accidents happen to even the most careful of movers.
The inventory sheet you created to estimate your move is a great place to start. You can work through that list to place values on your belongings. In some cases, determining the value of your personal property may be something you’ve already done for your home insurance policy. If that’s the case, this process should be even more straightforward!
At Charlottesville Moving Solutions, we give our customers the option to value their goods by their replacement cost or weight (the minimum coverage). Like us, most movers offer several protection plans underwritten by a nationwide insurer of movers.
For our customers who don’t request additional coverage, the maximum carrier liability is $0.60 per pound per item. That means that if any damage were to occur to your goods, the items would be repaired or reimbursed subject to a limit of $0.60 per pound of the item’s weight and a $100 deductible. To be certain of total coverage for any single damage, you must have valued the whole shipment for its total value.
If you have several valuable and irreplaceable belongings, the peace of mind you gain from adding additional coverage may be well worth it. Here are the three plans we offer to our customers:
Replacement Value
Special rates are available for shipments valued at over $150,000.
The Fine Print
Moving insurance does not include the following:
a. Live animals, insects, vermin, rodents, birds, poultry, fish or marine life
b. Automobiles, vehicles, transporting vehicles, trailers or containers (unless specifically described as property to be transported or stored in any written contract issued or accepted by you)
c. Accounts, bills, deeds, letters of credit, passports, lottery or other tickets, stamps, money, currency, securities, checks, drafts, notes, evidences of debt, commercial papers, blueprints, mechanical drawings, manuscripts, other valuable papers or records, bullion, coins, precious stones, jewelry, abstracts, paintings, etchings, drawings, rare books, tapestries, sculptures, statuary and other bona fide works of art, rarity, historic value or artistic merit
A note about simulated wood products:
Simulated wood products and pressed board furniture have poor structural integrity which does not lend itself to moving or repair. We will move these items carefully but cannot be responsible for damage of simulated wood or pressed board furniture.
Charlottesville Moving Solutions assumes no liability or responsibility for any items or cargo placed in the customer's own vehicle in rental equipment, and which Charlottesville Moving Solutions does not transport.
