5 Moving Tips for College Students

As a college student, you might have to pack and move your belongings two (or more) times each year. This process can be exhausting for students and their families, but there are some simple ways to make it easier!

We’ve offered packing and moving services to college students in the Charlottesville area for many years, and we’ve learned a lot along the way. Here are a few of our top moving tips for college students:

#1
Make the Most of Under-the-Bed Storage Containers

Many beds in dorms and college apartments have room for storage underneath, so it’s important to pack storage containers that you can use in these spaces. If you pack in under-the-bed storage containers or drawer storage units, you’ll barely have to unpack when you arrive!

#2
Create a Capsule Wardrobe for Each Season

Ever heard of a capsule wardrobe? The idea is that you pair down your wardrobe to a limited number of items or pull a selection of clothing items from your larger wardrobe in order to minimize the items in your closet. This is a great solution for college students with limited space to store clothes. You could create a seasonal capsule wardrobe by leaving your out-of-season clothes in storage at home. Swap out the clothes when you’re home during school breaks and bring everything back and forth!

#3
Pack Smaller, Lighter Boxes Instead of Big, Heavy Boxes

Move-in day can be crowded and hectic, and that may mean you’re waiting a while for the elevator in your dorm or apartment. One way to skip the wait is to pack your boxes or containers to be smaller and lighter so they’re easier to carry up the stairs. It might require a few extra trips, but those big boxes and the wait at the elevator won’t slow you down!

#4
Pack Cleaning Supplies, Snacks, and Water Last

It’s nice to have cleaning supplies handy when you arrive, so you can do an extra clean sweep in your new space before unpacking. You can also load the fridge with snacks and water, so they’re easy to grab when you need to refuel from all that moving and unpacking!

#5
Rent, Borrow, or Buy a Hand Truck and/or Furniture Dolly for the Day

In our opinion, hand trucks and furniture dollies are worth renting or buying because of how much they can speed up the moving process. They can also help make a move easier on your body! These tools are widely available for sale and rent at many home improvement stores.
