Tried and True Methods for Packing Breakable Items

When preparing for a move, packing fragile and breakable items can often feel intimidating. However, with the right tools and know-how, you’ll be set up for success!

Add cushioning first.

Adding packing material to the bottom of your box helps create a buffer that will cushion and protect your fragile items when the box is placed on the ground. You can use packing paper, bubble wrap, or even towels for this!

Fill hollow items with paper.

Hollow items like glassware may be at risk of breaking during a move. Gently fill them with packing paper to give them a little extra support and to help prevent accidents!

Choose the right box for your needs.

Did you know that you can purchase specialty boxes designed for breakable items? From glassware boxes with built-in dividers and heavy-duty boxes with thicker walls to TV and framed picture moving boxes…you’d be surprised at what’s out there!

We sell many of these boxes in our Charlottesville warehouse. Give us a call at 434-977-2705 or fill out our contact form for more information!

Pack items vertically.

Packing your items vertically can help preserve space and protect your breakable belongings. Instead of stacking plates as you would in your cupboards, line them up vertically with plenty of cushion in between.

Label fragile items clearly.

Your breakables are probably the most important items to label! Make sure the boxes clearly state “FRAGILE” on all sides. You can even purchase bright red tape to make sure the message gets across!

Purchase your own dividers.

If you have plenty of boxes but none specifically for glassware, you can purchase your own dividers! You can buy these “cell kits” through U-Haul, Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot, etc.

For heavy and fragile items, use small boxes.

Don’t overdo it with the weight! This is especially important for your more breakable items. Your heavy and fragile items should go in a different box than other breakables so that you can safely carry them to and from the moving truck.

Consider transporting your most valuable items in your personal vehicle.

While professional movers are accustomed to moving all kinds of boxes, transporting your most delicate and sentimental items yourself can sometimes be worth the peace of mind. Especially if it’s just a few boxes out of the rest of your breakable items, it might be worth considering adding these to the family vehicle!
