Moving this Spring? Here’s How to Protect Your New Home from Pollen
Springtime is one of the best seasons to move! The weather is moderate, the days are getting longer, and your move might even overlap with spring break, which could be convenient.
However, spring moves in Virginia always come with one particular inconvenience…pollen!
When you’re moving into a new space, the last thing you want is to bring this allergen in along with your furniture and belongings. If you’re not careful, a pollen-filled home could leave your family irritated and sneezing!
Here are our best tips for protecting your new space from pollen during your spring move:
Aim for a morning move.
Did you know that pollen counts actually vary throughout the course of the day? According to Healthline, researchers found that from 4 a.m. to noon, you will find lower amounts of pollen in the air. The peak times are between 2 and 9 p.m.! If you’re highly sensitive to pollen, consider scheduling your move early in the morning.
Remove your shoes before entering the house.
During this time of year, pollen seems to be everywhere. On moving day, if you're not careful, your shoes will pick up pollen and dispense it all over your new home. One way to avoid this is by removing your shoes at the door or having a few people responsible for moving items from the truck to the front door, and having another few people just inside the door with no shoes on, ready to take items to the room they belong to.
Wipe off furniture and boxes that have been sitting outside.
In preparation for moving day, you may have started placing boxes in the garage or driveway. If so, make sure to wipe these down with a microfiber cloth or paper towels before the movers arrive. Even a few hours outside can leave belongings with a layer of pollen. If you don’t clean your belongings before they’re on the truck, that layer of pollen will be transported directly to your new space!
Use furniture covers.
While not all furniture may need protection, you’ll want to cover sentimental, expensive, and upholstered pieces. To protect your things from pollen, you can use dust covers or wrap your furniture in stretch-wrap plastic. This will ensure that stray pollen lands on the plastic and is disposed of instead of sticking to your favorite loveseat.
Make sure all your boxes are properly sealed.
Finally, you’ll want to make sure any boxes are properly sealed as you pack them indoors. This will ensure your things stay protected from extra dust and pollen that accumulate during a move. Opt for cardboard boxes with flaps or plastic bins with lids instead of open-topped containers.
