Dealing With Homesickness After a Move
Moving can be an exciting change of scenery, but it can simultaneously feel like a lonely and daunting experience. Whether your routine has been disrupted, you’ve had to leave friends and family behind, or you are having to get acquainted with an unfamiliar environment, adjusting can be a process. It’s important to remember that it is entirely normal and understandable to experience emotions of grief or loneliness as a result of these factors.
It’s worth noting that it may be helpful to talk to a professional during times of transition. The purpose of this blog post is to suggest some simple approaches that could make that transition easier, not to provide a solution for situations that require mental healthcare in a professional setting. With that said, here are some of our top tips for settling in and making your new space feel like home:
1. Don't set a deadline for feeling "back to normal."
Chances are, there have been plenty of dates on the calendar already: goodbye parties, moving day, starting your new job, or having your first day of school. Giving yourself the space to adjust (however long it takes) may be just what you need to begin getting familiar with your new home and forming new routines. Alternately, putting pressure on yourself to feel settled may create an environment of stress that ends up being the exact thing preventing your adjustment. Change is never a one-size-fits-all. Go easy on yourself!
2. Fill your new home with things that bring you comfort.
This could look like a variety of things. One idea is to center the design of your new space around sentimental pieces of décor or furniture. Is there anything you brought from your old home associated with good memories and people you love? It could also be as simple as bringing in more softness through small touches. Throw blankets, candles, and rugs are all great examples of pieces that can warm up a space and make it feel more comfortable. Lighting is a huge contributor as well! If your overhead light feels harsh and uninviting, keep an eye out for table and floor lamps with a soft, warm glow. If you want to feel extra nostalgic, buy a candle you used to burn in your old space, use the same laundry detergent your mom does, or cook a familiar meal.
3. Find a mix of old and new routines that feel right for you!
Staying consistent with a familiar routine can bring a sense of stability to transitions. However, some of your ways may have to adapt to your new environment, which is not necessarily bad. Pay attention to the small things that excite and motivate you. How can you incorporate those things into your routine? For example, if there's a park near you that you are curious about, maybe start scheduling walks there on certain days, to have something to look forward to during the week!
4. Play tourist in your new city while things still feel unfamiliar.
Try to embrace the adventure of it instead of focusing on the unknown. How would things feel different if you took a weekend trip to this new city? What ideas does Trip Advisor suggest for the area? Are there local farmers' markets happening near you? Where are the hidden gem restaurants of the city? What events are happening this weekend that you would have attended in your previous location? And if you decide to show up at a new event or space, do your best to stay open to conversation! You might meet a neighbor who shares your interests!
5. Lastly, be intentional about staying in touch with friends and family!
This one might seem obvious, but you might easily forget it in the chaos of unpacking and getting settled. Having the familiarity of the people closest to you can bring a sense of grounding to a new space. Phone or video calls can go a long way, but depending on your distance, it could be possible to ask people to visit you or schedule a road trip back home for a weekend. A benefit of hosting those closest to you in a new space (especially early on) is that it can help create positive memories and associations with your new home.
